Reaction to Briggs chapter 11

Chapter 11 of “Journalism Next” ties directly into what we have been learning of late. By effectively linking, tagging, and tracking, a journalist can achieve greater exposure.

Tips to increase “Search Engine Optimization”
– Come up with numerous, specific tags. You don’t want to have to contend with bigger websites on the major tags.
– Link your stories to relevant articles, videos, or pictures that provide the reader with additional information.
– Track how people ended up on your website so that you can more effectively tailor your promotion techniques.

Lastly, as a journalist you have to keep current with the news by viewing other works so that you are staying relevant and looking at a certain story from a unique angle.

Reaction to Briggs chapter 10

In Chapter 10 of “Journalism Next”, Briggs encourages aspiring journalists to develop a sense of community with their viewers. Whether it be followers of your blog or someone viewing an article of yours on a news site, it is up to the journalist to communicate to a broad audience in a familiar manner.

When it comes down to it not everyone has advanced reading skills, the journalist must use words that are simple to understand. Writing the news must maintain a conversational feel.

Lastly, a journalist or blogger can enhance the communal feel of their works through the use of comments. By regularly checking comments that readers have placed on their stories, they can both communicate more effectively with their audience while also receiving some constructive feedback. By commenting back, a more personal bond is developed with the reader that may encourage them to come back to you for future news.

Microsoft Word 2010 expert workshop #1

Microsoft Word is typically perceived as a bland program that can easily be mastered within a few days. This notion is false as this program is far more intricate than I could have ever imagined. I took the time to learn more about this program through a STAR Lab workshop called Word Expert 1: Working Faster with Tim Baker.

Microsoft Word is not simply a program where you can merely type a document and print it off. Built into the program are multiple tools that can speed up document formation. For example, headers can be saved independent of documents so that they can be inserted whenever the user desires with a single click of the mouse. In fact, Microsoft Word even has a photo editing tool that tops even Photoshop. In word, a couple clicks can leave an inserted picture transparent.

By using the find and replace feature, one could type in a few letters and symbols that can automatically turn into entire sentences. Furthermore, the find and replace feature enables the user to automatically underline or capitalize anything they want.

Such features are underused among the average Microsoft Word user but can make a student’s life so much easier. While this workshop seems dull and useless, I strongly encourage any Microsoft user to take it.

Reaction to Briggs chapter 6

Chapter 6 of “Journalism Next” focuses on the photography element of journalism. As we move into the digital age, there has been a sort of shift in traditional photography wisdom. You can rapidly take pictures and upload them, even alter them with editing tools.

However, one thing remains constant in all of this. It is always better to snap a natural photograph of an event than force one by manipulating people and objects for a desired pose.

Possibly the greatest advantage of photographs is that they overcome language barriers. While many American citizens may not fully understand English, photographs provide them with a quick way to get some news. If the photographer really succeeded in their mission, a photograph can be news all by itself.

While journalism typically is most closely associated with writing, it is often photography that provides an emotional connection with the audience.

Reaction to Briggs chapter 5

Chapter 5 of “Journalism Next” deals primarily with mobile journalism. Mobile journalism has been enhanced over the past few years with the rapid advancement of technology, particularly the cell phone. What used to require pounds and pounds of equipment can now be done with a high powered phone such as an iPhone or an Android.

The Benefits of Mobile Journalism

  • Speed, news can get out from anywhere, instantly.
  • The audience is increasingly mobile, so journalism must follow suit.
  • The public is now involved in the media.

The Downside of Mobile Journalism

  • There has been a reduced role of the “gatekeepers” of journalism.
  • Photos and videos can be doctored or altered.

Everyone seems to have photo, video, and blogging capabilities on their phones and as such are well equipped journalists. In short, everyone can report news now, so the burden falls on us to validate it.
